Fran Zeman – NIŠTA

The description Fran Zeman sent me about his new video said, it was a Street video, filmed entirely in Croatia, mainly on team trips with the Šuma Crew. Turns out, it’s a banger and a half!

So much wild stuff in this one, that the title of the
video (NIŠTA) doesn’t seem to be fitting, as this translates into nothing in English. I guess this doesn’t refer to the riding, but more so to Fran’s hope, that even though filming for this project ended somewhat abruptly, at least the outcome won’t be worth nothing (ništa).

Certainly not, sir! So make sure to enjoy 3 and a half minutes of excellent entertainment from the streets of Croatia and then dive into an interview with the man himself below, which contains some great snaps by his friend Marin Stupar.

Hey Fran, what’s up. Please introduce yourself for those who don’t know you yet.
Hello! Thanks a lot for the opportunity and thanks for publishing the video, it really means a lot to me, filmer Jakov and the whole Croatian scene.
I am a 28 years old Street rider with 15 years of BMX experience, love riding everything, but I got the most love for Street riding, since it made me who I am right now 🙂 My friend Vjeran and I started ŠumaCrew 15 years ago and we are happy to say that its one of the longest extreme sports communities and crews in Croatia.

What have you been up to lately?
Apart from primary job, we have organized the 11th ŠC Kam in Bjelovar, and it turned out perfectly. BMX Day in Zagreb is coming up, so we are also excited about that. Some new videos are dropping, so I had to edit those and get them ready. Apart from that, I am motivated to ride, visit some nice places, and get to ride those places with my friends and film. Also pretty hyped about the new plans that we have for šumacrew.

What’s your local scene like?

Our local scene is cool, but there is still lot of work to do. There is not that many people who ride or produce content (video, photo), so it’s a bit hard to get a bigger trip/project rolling. But apart from that, we have some amazing riders in Street and Park, and we are really happy that the scene is growing slowly and steadly. With šumacrew, we just want to provide motivation and that spark that gets you going to produce cool shit. Film with your friends, and organize a silly jam, so everyone can get together and hang out…

So how did your new video come about?

I talked to Jakov about filming a bigger video, since I haven’t filmed a proper Street video in a long time. He was up for it, so we started in the summer of 2020. We started really good, but then he had work/life things and I had been finishing college and starting to work, so we rarely even filmed the last year or two. One day the talk led to just wrapping it up and maybe start working on a new one…

What kind of equipment was used to make the video?

All the equipment was Jakov’s camera and my iPhone. There is some clips filmed with different cameras, but Jakov used a Sony Nex VG20 mostly.

For how long did you film for this project?
From 2020 to 2024. We have been waiting to premiere it at the Jam in Bjelovar so that’s why it came out so late, since we filmed the last clip a year ago.

How many cities did you film in, which city had the best energy?
We filmed in Zagreb mostly, with some Osijek clips. We have visited Pula for a ŠC trip, and there I managed to film a few clips. Other than that it’s mostly Zagreb. Pula is amazing, the energy and locals there, damn! Shout-out to Kromo and Lord!

What trip or meet-up stand out?
I just liked the Zagreb ones, since it was just raw BMX thing. I mean, we had a great time, but there was just Jakov, Marin Stupar, and me, and I just have to go and hit it.
But surely the best one for me is the Zagreb big ledge. 180 Pegs was scary at first, but after a few tries, I felt comfy. Dreamed about doing that, so yeah, that would be my favorite session filming for this video.

What was the scariest clip to film?

Scariest one was probably the ender 180 Pegs. The rail was so fast, it was scary to get out of that. I wanted to do an Indian but, the speed was unreal.

And which clip took the longest to film?
The long Pegs to Hard Whip took sooo many tries.
Loads of times I would just grind it halfway and end up in mud and if I went till the end I would slip a pedal, because of the muddy shoes from the tries before. Really had a hard time with that one, mental battle for sure.

How many tries did it take you for the first clip?
It took me 2-3 tries to get it good. Marin, who was shooting the photos, wasn’t satisfied with the one he shot, so I just redid it for few more times until all of us got it perfect. I really like that photo! Thanks Senfe!

Where there any injuries during filming?
Just cuts and bruises. Maybe I just forgot, haha.

Didn’t an injury stop one of the tricks?
Oh yeah, I wanted to do this big 360 Rail Hop, but bruised my heel like crazy. Couldn’t ride for a month. Also 3 hours before a contest, damn! Well, it’s part of the game…

How do you deal with downtime from riding?
I try to make new plans for the upcoming year and yeah, just like to get a good rest to give my body time to heal. I also try so stay active as much as I can. I’m always up for the physical challenges…

Do you find it difficult to pick riding back up?
Sometimes it is hard to jump back in, but then it just happens. I just think about the stuff I want to do and try to believe in myself… When the vibe is good, it’s pretty easy for me to get psyched. I like to huck myself, I like that feeling.
During the filming of this video, I had some motivational problems, since it just seemed pointless. But I just turned it into a challenge for myself, and that’s what keeps me going, I think.

What was your favorite set-up/spot?
I really like all the set-ups, the variety is something that I really like, but rails are probably on the top of my list. I really like a good rail to do a Toot Hanger.

Who did the cooking on your trips?
I like to cook. Just some classic stuff, while boys are in town: Senf (Marin) is really into cooking, so he did that on trips sometimes. There is also times, when we try to experiment with stuff from the fridge. I like food, daaaamn! Burek and Goulash are the best!

Are there any specific foods you enjoyed making for the guys?
Stuff that takes too much time, the ones you have too cook for 4-5 hours, while having a good chat and a beer. Goulash or beans or something like that… In Croatia, we call it Čušpajz.

What’s a dish or restaurant in Croatia that you would recommend people to try?
Uh, I’m not sure about the food, but im sure everyone should try Rakija (Dunja) in whatever restaurant they go to in Croatia, hahaha.

Like you mentioned earlier, the video was filmed on team trips partly. Who was the biggest team motivator?
It’s hard to balance riding, filming and planning everything, but the whole team puts in the work and that just makes it easier to sort everything out. Vjeran is really helping with everything, and its so nice. Marin is also playing a big part in the whole story… I just like everyone on the team, and I really love it when we get together to ride!

“I really love it when we get together to ride!”

Is there a certain team trip you would like to go on in the future?
I would like to go anywhere, just to have fun, ride my bike and be productive. I would like to go to Barcelona more frequently, but apart from that I don’t have a special idea, Maybe to do a tour through Balkan countries would be nice.

Are there any foreign riders that motivate you?
There are lots of riders that motivate me, I am a big Garrett, Dennis and Nathan fan, so I look up to them a lot. Any kind of riding motivates me, so I just enjoy watching anything, since it gets me more hyped on riding.

“Any kind of riding motivates me, so I just enjoy watching anything.”

What are your days like after finishing this video?
I just do my regular stuff and make plans for the future. The only thing is that I somehow feel that I have energy for a new video. I hope, I’ll have more free time to start filming as soon as I can. This year I will concentrate more on my riding and less on organizing jams, since I really enjoy just traveling and riding my bike, hanging out and meeting new people.

Any plans for future projects/edits?
Since we got our crew ready, I think it’s time to do something memorable for ŠC and for the whole scene. Also have some cool projects coming up with Sunshine Skate Crew, filming for a new DVD in Zagreb, and we plan that I have a part in there also, hyped about that.

Anything else you can reveal yet?
Nevolja Video No. 2 is going to be in works from late 2025 till I don’t know when, and I should have a part there. I’m hyped since it’s a real deal video with a real deal filmer and I’m going in all the way this time, haha!
